Abstract. The article analyzes the experience in working with novice international relations scholars in the form of pilot studies. Based on the author’s experience, the article reveals the role of pilot studies in shaping and developing research competencies of school students, undergraduate and graduate students who consider research activities in the field of international relations as a future career. The author pays special attention to the model of scientific mentoring as a basis for work with novice researchers.
